I have now finished testing the Zoom H4 - here about 425 USD incl. all cost=
s.
If one removes the internal mic'c of H4, replace them with a 3,5 mm
plug in power input, and run the H4 with a external 7,5V - 9 v
battery pack - it is, as far as I know, the only low cost machine
that can compete with HiMD. (Both MT24/96 and Edirol R-09 have much
noisier inputs.
I have not tested with any Marantz PMD model.)
The recording level setting will this way be linked L/R.
The conversion is not at all difficult to do. Any normally handy
person can do it.
One can also use a external device, connected the the XLR inputs and
turning the phantom power into Plug In Power - but then you are stuck
into setting the levels one by one.
(As when you are using phantom powered mic's)
In this shaky market with all kinds of more or less faulty inputs,
the Zoom H4 is a good alternative until the market has cleared up a
bit. Also the phantom power seems to work okay with different loads.
