I believe these were sold under the "Audubon" name for about 25% the
starting bid listed on the ebay page you linked.
I saw one once and thought it was intended as a "toy" for kids, but I
don't mean that in a terribly negative way --- it would be fun for a kid
to fool around with and might spark in interest.
I know one researcher who tried using a similar device in conjunction
with a video camera and switched immediately to something else.
