Here's a way to use the funds you received as a holiday
gift: Trew Audio is offering $1200 (20%) off the MSRP
for the Sonosax Mini R82. Sale price is "only" $4800 USD.

I see Liberman Audio is also offering the Mini R82 for
$4800. So maybe the "sale" will become permanent.
Actually, $4800 is not impossibly bad when you consider
that the Sound Devices 744t, with "only" four channels,
costs $4000.
The Mini R82 offers 2 XLR mic inputs with preamplifiers,
4 analog line inputs, and 8 digital inputs. Up to 8 simul-
taneous tracks can be recorded. Audio is sampled at rates
up to 24/192, and stored as WAV files either to an internal
hard disc or to a Compactflash card.
The Mini R82 can act as master or slave for many flavors
of time code. The recorder has a pre-record buffer, too.
The Mini R82 is indeed miniature: measuring 120 x 80 x 28mm
(4.75" x 3.15" x 1.1"), the Mini R82 is about half the size
of the Sound Devices 722 and 744T. The weight is 430gr
(15 oz) with four AA standard alkaline batteries installed.
How long 4 AA cells can power the recorder is unknown.
