I believe all Hi-MD machines record in stereo mode only. If the input
plug is monaural, the audio is recorded on the left channel, and the
right channel is silent.

Another shortcoming is that the record level for the left and right
channels can't be adjusted independently.

Looking at these features in the RH1's chief competitors:

The M-Audio Microtrack 2496 does have separate hardware level controls
for left and right channels, and (for firmware 1.3.3 and later) can
record one channel only to reduce file size.

The Edirol R-09 has a switch for stereo or mono mic input. If set to
stereo while you use just one mic, the audio is recorded to the left
channel, and the right channel is silent. If set to mono while you
use a single mic, the audio is recorded to both left and right
channels. Stereo and mono recordings use the same file storage space.

The R-09 has just one level control for both channels, so a change in
level is applied equally to both channels.

The Zoom H4 can record a single track when in multi-track mode (thanks
to group member flawn1951 for pointing this out). In stereo mode the
H4 records two channels, even when only one mic is used. I think the
record level can be set for each channel, but only through an
on-screen menu that takes a bit of navigating to reach.

The Marantz PMD660 has independent level control knobs for left and
right channels. It is possible to set the record format to mono,
saving file space.
