If "power" means the ability to add gain to the
signal, the Sound Devices web pages show the 722
capable of adding 70dB gain to the mic signal in
normal gain mode. Mixpre maximum gain is rated at
66dB, less if providing phantom power.
The 722 has a low gain mode that adds a maximum of
55dB gain also. Maybe this is where the "Mixpre
has more power" statement comes from.
The Equivalent Input Noise of the two devices is
similar, according to Sound Devices. 722 =3D -128dBu,
Mixpre =3D -126 dBu at maximum gain. Both numbers
are excellent.
The Mixpre is a great field preamp. It has two
XLR inputs for pro mics, and two XLR line-level analog
outputs. There is no digital output. Its two AA batteries
last for about 5 hours when providing 48V phantom power.
The Mixpre has a 1/4" jack for headphones and good metering
LEDs. The Mixpre weighs about 28oz/800g due to its solid
metal construction. Dimensions are similar to a small
paperback book.
The Mixpre replaces the MP-2 in the Sound Devices
line. The Mixpre is also sold by Shure as the FP24.
Price online is about $675.
