Hi Thomas--
Compared to my Sharp MT-90's and MT-190 MD recorders, the Hi-MD power
monitoring circuit seems to be more vulnerable to low battery
conditions leading to the all important "write to disc" process not
completing after "Stop" is pressed. I tend to leave the Hi-MD deck in
record pause or running while monitoring with headphones for long
periods of time. When I don't want to risk losing a recording due to
low battery power (or cool weather), I either use a brand new
Alkaline battery (AA- 1.5 volts) or better yet, John Hartog's
suggested battery sled of 4 NiMH AA's. These are the same type of
rechargeable batteries as Dan describes. You need a "type A" power
plug (.7mm X 2.35mm) to connect the sled to your recorder.
Sony _may_ have improved the low-power/auto shut-off circuit with
their newest models. Perhaps someone with experience with both
generations can report. Rob D.
