If my recent post about using an iPod Nano for casual recording piqued
your interest, you'll really like this new product.

Trekstor, a German company that makes MP3 players, is now shipping a
new player called the Vibez. The player is available in 8GB ($170) or
12GB ($200) sizes. Read about it here:
http://www.trekstor.de/en/products/detail_mp3.php?pid=3D66

The Vibez player includes a recorder function that can capture stereo
16/48 WAV files through a 3.5mm input. The player is similar in size
to the ubiquitous iPod. With battery it weighs only 71g (2.5oz).

The Vibez battery provides 20 hours of listening, and maybe half that
while recording. The battery is rechargeable through the USB port.
The battery is also easily replaceable in the field. Pop the back
cover off the Vibez and the battery just falls into your hand.
Replacement batteries are available for $30.

The Vibez attaches to your Mac or PC via USB, and appears like an
external hard drive. Drag and drop file transfer works fine, no need
to use a music organizer like iTunes or Zune. The Vibez can play MP3,
WMA, WAV, OGG and FLAC formats. If your MP3s include ID3 tags, Vibez
can sort and retrieve files using them.

The Vibez costs a lot less than an iPod with recorder accessory, and
with 12GB it has plenty of space for music and casual recordings.
Like the iPod, recording is controlled via a menu, so the Vibez is not
very convenient as a primary recorder. But as a music player with
recording capability, it looks pretty good. Great price, too.

The unanswered question at this point is how the Vibez preamp and
analog to digital circuits sound.

In USA, the Vibez is available from Amazon.com, J&R music World, B&H
Photo Video and other locations.
