Mike,
I'm sorry for this late response, but I have been out of town.
You can find short MP3 recordings of the songs and calls of several species
of oropendola, along with recordings of the songs and calls of over 2000
other species of Neotropical birds at the Xeno Canto website. This site is
very sophisticated and is a joy to use.
The species that you heard on NPR is most likely the Montezuma Oropendola,
which is common in parts of Mexico and Central America. It has a fantastic
song. Doug Von Gausig has some killer recordings of this species on his web
site.
