Thanks, Clay, it's nice to hear that Sonosax is finally
ready to show the R82 field recorder. The preliminary
user guide is online here: http://tinyurl.com/hdz4t
Its specs are intriguing:
Compactflash and 30GB hard disc
should make simultaneous second copy possible
time code slave (and master, I think)
two analog mic inputs with high quality preamp
eight digital inputs (by a breakout cable)
programmable pre-roll buffer
A/D sampling rates up to 24/192
mid/side decoding for headphone monitoring
dimensions 120 x 80 x 28mm
weight 430g
powered by 4 AA batteries, but presumably some
external power option can be made to work
Estimated price is an astronomical $6000 USD, but this
is actually cheap compared to other 8-channel
recorders like the Zaxcom DEVA IV. The DEVA IV has 8
analog inputs, so for correct comparison you have
to factor in an additional 6 channels of preamp and
A/D converter.
The DEVA IV weighs 2270g and is five times larger
than the R82. Recorders with similar size and weight
include the Nagra ARES-PII+ and Sony D1.
Sonosax plans to introduce a less expensive 2-channel
version called the R2 soon after the R82 is
introduced. It remains to be seen how much lower
the price is, and how many of the features are
removed from the R82.
