Google Earth is a great tool to plan a trip and also to document a
trip by overlying a gps track on a terrain image in 3D! If you use
OziExplorer, a very smart GPS logger and plotter (and much more, also
available for PocketPcs), you can export waypoints and tracks ready
to be displayed on a GIS or on Google Earth!
Even if the altitude recorded by the GPS is not accurate, or is
missing, Google Earth adapts the track to the altitude of the terrain
surface! This is very helpful for example when you plan a walk by
loading a georeferenced map in OziExplorer; after creating your
planned track you can load it in Google to examine the environments
and the habitats your going to visit.
To see what I mean, open the page
http://www.unipv.it/cibra/trail.html then right-click on the link in
the page to download the .kml file and then click on the file (I
don't know why the click just on the link does not work!!). It will
start Google Earth and a flight to my latest trail on the Alps will begin..=
