Certainly a marvellous sequence, but sadly not entirely natural; while the shot with Sir Attenborough whispering in the background really looks like there's a wild bird, the close-up head shots when the bird is mimicking the chainsaw is most likely a semi-captive bird, and not necessarily the same individual. This TV sequence was discussed extensively on the Australian birding mail list a while back from the programme was first broadcast. According to local Lyrebird experts, wild Lyrebirds apparently don't mimic mechanical sounds unlike the birds in movies and even in nature 'documentaries'. Richard Ranft England |
