The forum at TapersSection.com has several field reports,
including a few recordings to download and compare. See
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=3D65175.0
(Registration may be required.)

The comments I've read so far have been positive. A few notes:

--R-09 starts up fast, ready to record in ~3 seconds.

--LCD screen is small, but it's easy to read

--Onscreen meters react quickly

--Peak light and battery indicator are useful

--Compared to R-1, more mic gain and somewhat better self-noise

--Largest file size is 2GB, that's 2 hours of two-channel recording at
24/48

--R-09 can format SD cards up to 2GB. 4GB card can be used if
formatted in a computer.

--Battery life is good: reports of 6 hours (WAV) to 8 hours (MP3)
record time using 2500 mAh batteries

--R-09 will not recharge its batteries, must use external charger

Street price is about $400. Read more about the Edirol R-09 here
