Three recording products were in the news this week.

The first is the Edirol R-09. Delivery to dealers started 25 May.
This cell-phone size recorder digitizes at 24/48 and records to Secure
Digital memory cards. Interest in this recorder is high, since its
predecessor, the R-1, is well regarded. Street price in USA is about
$400, with supplies limited.

Second is a new "pro" version of the Edirol R-4 four channel recorder.
The R-4 Pro records at 24/96 and saves data to an 80GB disc (up from
40GB). The unit includes SMPTE time code (master or slave), a power
adapter for Anton-Bauer external batteries, and a nifty black finish.
List price is announced to be $2400. I expect a street price of $2000,
maybe as low as $1800. (Standard R-4 $1600 list, $1200 street.)
Delivery will begin in September.

Third, AEQ, a Spanish supplier to the radio industry, announced the
availability of the PAW 120 recorder. The $800 PAW 120 is similar in
size and features to the $1000 Nagra ARES-M. In other words, the PAW
120 is a cell-phone size recorder with 1GB internal flash memory and
built-in mic.

Digitizing mono at 16/48, the PAW 120's memory will fill in 3 hours.
It takes about 30 minutes to copy the contents of the memory to an
external device.

I saw the PAW 120 at the recent NAB conference. Its case is sturdy
aluminum, and display is a large OLED. Control buttons were reasonably
large and easy to locate. Power is via two AA cells.

The PAW 120 has several pro features, including pre-roll buffer,
configurable high pass filter, and a cable for a mono XLR mic. The
machine can store multiple configurations for mic type, analog and
digital boost, plug-in power, and other settings. Use of a
pre-defined template will reduce the chance of errors in the field.

The company brochure claims a signal to noise ratio for the mic input
of better than 122dB, A-weighted. That's good for a sub-$1000
recorder. For more information, see
