Lindsay: The Crossbill project sounds neat. Will you post some recordings? As for microphones, another possibility is to use an ME62 (omni) in a parabola. You'd then have all your miccs with the same connectors (XLR's) and could even save money by gettng by with two capsules and one powering component for the micropones. I use an MD a lot and the small connector is probably its weakest point. Small tugs on (even wind blowing) the wires often results in in transient bad connetions with the 3.5 jack. If I could use all XLR's, I would. Good luck!
