Welcome Kyle!

[I tend to beat "what recorder should I buy?" questions to death, so
feel free to reply to me off-list with follow-up questions.]

Briefly, you'd have to use a portable phantom power supply for your
mkh's but the lowly Sony HiMD recorders might provide an improvement
over an HHB Portadat when you consider (1) HiMD does uncompressed
recording 44.1/16bit (2) The HiMD's mic pres are on par with or maybe
quieter (3) HiMD has more preamp gain (can be important if you work
with ambience in quiet locations) and (4) the HiMD media are larger
than regular MD (1 GB = 92 minutes uncompressed or 8 hours at ATRAC
3+ now called "HiSP."). Folks do complain some about the
menu/interface but at a few hundred bucks, hard to believe, huh?
Below is a link to a side-by-side test. The HHB is spec'd with more
preamp noise than the Sound Devices 722 (the most expensive recorder
of the featured comparisons) if you are curious how a HHB would fit
in.

Lots of people are especially excited about the new ~$300 MZ-RH1 HiMD
model coming out soon.
