My laptop runs about -45dB from Line In with nothing attached and -36 dB
with Microphone in and nothing attached. So I've never used it to record
or digitize sounds. The desktop computer I use isn't as bad as that, but
I paid extra $$ for the better sound card in it.

As I recall, there are several WEB sites that review sound cards and
present results of testing them. These might be some help.
