Edirol is planning to add a second small recorder to
its product line. It's called the R-9. Information
is limited at this point but I think the following
is correct:
-- records WAV files at 24/48 (Edirol R-1 offers 24/44.1)
-- records MP3 files at 320kbits (same as R-1)
-- records to Secure Digital (SD) card (R-1 uses Compactflash)
-- includes built-in stereo mics (same as R-1)
-- 3.5mm TRS jacks for mic and line input (same as R-1)
-- shorter and narrower than R-1
(looks like a cell phone, while the R-1 is square)
-- powered by 2 AA batteries (same as R-1)
-- lacks the EQ features of the R-1 (no problem)
-- priced below R-1, street price < $400
(before the purchase of the SD flash memory cards)
-- release date is sometime this Spring
The R-1 has a decent preamp and good built-in mics.
Let's hope the R-9 gets the same high quality components.
The R-1 has excellent battery life; the R-9 should offer
the same.
SD cards are available today in sizes up to 4GB, with
prices equal to Compactflash of comparable size.
