Rich,
The birds must have been as restless as you on that night to be 
making all the sounds at midnight.  I don't think you was very 
concerned for your safety because your foot steps sound very 
regular.  And the crooker would just be one of those bumps in the 
dark for me, it doesn't sound too large though.
