Sony is releasing its new digital recorder, the PCM-D1, for the home
market on November 21. MSRP is 200,000 yen, or almost $1700 USD. As
you may recall, this is the recorder with the analog meters and
built-in mics.
The web page describing the PCM-D1 has more specifications than were
available before. Read the machine translation of the Japanese
announcement here: http://tinyurl.com/a7cwc
In size and overall performance, the PCM-D1 seems to be closest to the
Nagra ARES-PII+. Both recorders are sized to be held in ond hand,
both have a built-in mic, and both have excellent mic preamp specs. I
think I would prefer the more expensive PII+, which is somewhat
smaller, has better battery life, and supports pro mics with an XLR
cable and phantom power.
