There's a very detailed review of five new field recorders at
Electronic Musician. The review is online at
http://emusician.com/mag/emusic_playing_field/
Rather than spending time analysing oscilloscope traces, the author
relates the anecdotes of experienced professional sound recordists who
used the equipment for several weeks. Then the author captured some
representative samples of music, voice and outdoor ambience, and
describes the comments of a group of critical listeners. All in all,
a very creditable way to describe the recorders.
No big surprise in the conclusion: Everybody loves the Sound Designs
722, at $2375, the most expensive recorder in the test. The Fostex
FR-2, $1250, is praised highly for its sound quality and professional
design details.
