Luckily, the cabin pressure in airlines isn't supposed to go
below that level.

Cast my vote for the hard drive's venting system as the reason.
But it may well be a CYA spec, and the drive may work fine a
much lower pressures. The problem may not be operating AT low
pressures, but related to pressure equalization (before or
after).

Apple's technical specs for the Ipod (see
http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html) state:

"Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)"
