While as with most things there are exceptions and some people who don't do
things sensibly, most birding tour operators end up with very little profit
once they've paid their staff. Many of their tour leaders publish bird
sounds, write ornithological articles and are active in conservation
projects, so if you look at the whole picture the existence of the birding
tour bussiness has contributed a lot to ornithology and conservation. Of
course there are always a few fly-by-night operators who go along for the
ride and put little back into ornithology and conservation ...
