David,
I've listened to your files and looked at their
waveform and specs. Your "frog chorus" critters sound
like they could be Leptodactylus insularum. They also
have that familiar upward FM pattern observed in
several other species of Leptodactylus. "The groaning"
file is a bit harder to pin down for me. My best guess
is that it could be a treefrog, Phrynohyas venulosa.
Did you record this fellow up in the canopy, and if
so, do you remember roughly how high up it was? By
your description (loud and confusing), it sounds like
it could be a treefrog calling from a treehole (which
they often do, to amplify their calls).
Any other suggestions from Neotropical herpers?
Cheers,
Ariadne.
