The MZ-M100 does have manual gain control. Unfortunately,
the recorer reverts to automatic when you switch it off,
so you have to change to manual whenever to wish to record.
It's easy to forget to do this when a bird unexpectedly
starts vocalizing and you rush to start recording.
A copy of the MZ-M100 owners manual is online at
http://www.docs.sony.com/release/MZM100.pdf
The MZ-M100 is a "professional" version of Sony's Hi-MD
recorder. The kit inludes a Sony MZ-RH10 Hi-MD recorder,
the ECM-DS70P stereo microphone and MDR-EO931 earbud headphones.=20
The kit also permits USB uploading to Windows PCs ( via Sonic
Stage software) and to Macintosh (via Hi-MD WAV Importer).
The MZ-M100 costs a little less than $400 in USA. The
MZ-RH10 costs about $230. So if you don't want the
microphone and don't use a Macintosh, you can save $170.
The Sony MZ-RH910 Hi-MD recorder costs less than $175.
The MZ-RH910 lacks the MZ-RH10's fancy electroluminescent
display (quite useful when recording in low light situations),
and has an internal battery with lower capacity (4 hours record
time in Hi-MD versus 5.5 hours in the MZ-RH10). Otherwise,
the MZ-RH910 works well and makes the same quality recordings
as the more expensive MZ-RH10.
