What ive read about the Tascam DA-P1 dat machine is that its pre-amp controls are in effect really just a variable pad that control the amount of signal after the pre-amp stage. So while reducing the "gain" on the DA-P1 keeps the ad convertor from overloading, it doesn't do anything for pre-amp overloads. The only remedy for which is using pads before going into the DA-P1. Perhaps you could try this with your setup, get a couple -10 or -20 db pads and see if you still have the problem.
