Martyn,
I think that I may be confused as to what is ON subject.

What could be more on subject than a discussion of how to better match the
output of a microphone to a minidisc player?  For me, recording involves a
microphone and a recorder, and how you use them together.  The special needs
of the nature recordist most specifically involve getting low noise
performance out of the system.

My special needs involve trying to keep salt water out of recording
equipment, and that doesn't get discussed very often.  But that's OK.
