The specification we seek is called Equivalent Input Noise (EIN).
It's the one-number description of how noisy a mic preamp is. It's
usually measured with a 150-ohm resistor terminating the input, a
20-20KHz bandwidth, unweighted, and comes out around -128dBu. See
Dennis Bohn's excellent article:

http://www.rane.com/note145.html

It's tricky to do right. Given a realistic EIN for the preamp in
question, the relationship of its noise to a mic's noise can be
calculated easily.
