Thanks for the background info. Just looking at
it practically, an external mic pre amp that is
-118dBU EIN A will perform fine with those mics
in terms of noise. You can compute this yourself
with chart #3 on this page=20
http://www.rane.com/note148.html .I added -8 dBu
to the -110 derived from the mkh 30's 14dB(A)
self noise and 25 mV/Pa sensitivity to create a
1dB noise "buffer" for the preamp.

I believe all the preamps you mention are -118
dBu or better (higher negative numbers are
better), you can check their specs to be sure.
Some people feel the sound quality is very
different between high quality preamps. In the
A/B tests I've done between good pres, I came to
the conclusion that subtle differences in my
"matched" reference monitor speakers are probably
more noticeable. But that's my opinion. The Sony
NH-900 recorder's internal mic pre I've been
testing is in the neighborhood of -118 EIN.

Its a shame to have to spend $800 or more to get
acceptable noise performance. You shouldn't get a
bunch of hiss when recording something as loud as
music. Did you consider taking it back to the
dealer with your good mics, turning up of the
record gain and evaluating it together? Maybe
its not working up to spec? Rob D.
