There's a good discussion about the Marantz PMD660 on the transom.org
message board. The people who participate are primarily involved in
electronic news gathering, but the issues raised and solutions
discovered are useful to all. Read the messages here:

One frequently mentioned PMD660 problem is difficulty using NiMH
rechargeables instead of alkaline AA bateries. Participants on the
Transom message board reported problems with many different NiMH
battery brands.=20

Message #225 on the Transom website, posted August 2, provides the
solution. It seems that many NIMH battery brands have a slightly
longer body than Alkalines do, with a shorter positive contact point.
As a result, even though the NiMH battery appears to be fitting
snugly, the battery's positive pole does not make sufficient contact
with the recorder's battery tray.=20

Sony, Panasonic, Duracell, Sanyo and Radio Shack NiMH rechargables all
have this shape, and won't work properly in at least some PMD660s.
Energizer rechargeables were sized more like an Alkaline battery, and
work OK.

To solve the problem, the message's author had Liberman Sound in El
Cerrito, CA add copper strips at the positive contact points in the
battery tray. This solved the problem, and the PMD660 now works fine
with all NiMH rechargeables.
