In Tom Clancey's non-fiction book "Submarines" a nuclear sub went missing after
leaving the Mediterranean in the late sixties. An engineer found the records
from three hydrographical recordings (from Newfoundland and the US) and was
able to pinpoint the breakup sounds of the sub two thousand miles away using
triangulation. He also pinpointed it within two hundred meters. It would not be
surprising if some whales can hear as well or better than hydrophones!
