At midnight owl would be more likely, though the preditor does not have
to be a bird. My take is that the bird singing was taken and it's wing
flaps are what you hear, as well as it's calls. No sound from what took
it. There are a number of preditors that might not kill right away. Say,
for instance, a cat. A snake would be another choice, but I doubt you
have snakes.
