Several audio archives have gone (or are the the process of going) digital, so your best bet would be to talk with people who've already confronted your problem and made a decision about it. For example, the Borror lab see http://blb.biosci.ohio-state.edu/ probably knows a lot as they've just been digitizing a lot of their material. Hope this helps....
