I think some of this is a matter of impedance matching. Results are a
little more explainable if you pay attention to the impedance of the mic
and pre. In addition to things like mic sensitivity and self noise.
I have my doubts about PIP being a factor. Unless the mic depends on it,
then recorders are variable as to the PIP power they supply. It's not
near as standardized a thing as phantom power.
