I'm certainly another who highly disapproved of that statement.

As way of thought, just think about how many marshes are still there 
through the support of Ducks Unlimited. Or how many wildlife preserves 
exist only through the support of hunters. Or how much access we have 
because it's there for fishermen. Those areas preserve a whole lot more 
than just ducks or deer for hunting.

I'm just back from a long loop through the west, where I visited many 
such areas. And was very happy they were there, I definitely enjoyed 
their wide variety of wildlife.
