Muir Woods, a unit of the National Park Service (NPS) Golden Gate
Recreation Area (GGNRA) in the San Francisco Bay area is starting
attended logging data collection this summer as part of its effort to
develop a soundscape management plan. NPS recognizes soundscape as a
resource to be protected, and the first step to doing so is to make an
inventory of the resource and track changes to it over time. Attended
observer logging is one of the ways in which inventory and change can
be measured. Members of the Nature Sounds Society (NSS) have been
working with NPS on this topic for some months and has done some of
the preliminary work on data gathering and testing a new program to
enter data via PDA.
Muir Woods will host a volunteer training on Sunday, June 12 4 PM - 8
PM. In addition to the attended logging, the Muir Woods would like to
collect high quality digital recordings at the attended logging sites.
Participants are welcome to bring recording gear, and no previous
experience with attended logging is necessary. Meet at the visitor
center at 4 PM. Call Park Ranger Jim McDonald at 415-388-0107 or
e-mail him at to let him know that you are
coming or to get more details.
