The end cap is not necessary to the structure, though it adds to it's
strength. I'd not cart it around for long periods in the field without
binding the opening as it will work out of the rear cam clamp in time
unless held together with the end cap or something.

However, the zepplin body is the male threads (which stick out) and
the cap the female.

You do not, however, have to do it the way your are thinking. Look at
my M/S page, the two MKH-80's are side address. They are set up with
the side behind the middle.
