We had these same sorts of discussions when the Portadisc was
introduced. It get's twice as long, or more on it's set of AA
rechargables. But, ultimately, if you get to where there is no outside
source of recharging, you have to pack a lot of batteries, or maybe pack
a large portable solar array.
As minidisc goes away, the choices in recorders that can go for extended
periods on a single charge will dwindle. Surprising it should be so. One
would think that at least compact flash should be easy on batteries.
It is no problem to go portable indefinitely if you have access to the
charging capabilities of a motor vehicle. It pays to think about how
many types of batteries you are committing to and try and minimize that.
You need a organized plan. I keep most of my stuff to AA's, from
recorder to headlamps. Which makes the recharge problem more manageable.
With my new digital camera I've got a new Lion pac to deal with, yet
another charger (and it's backup) to cart along. I've 7 outlets on my
Ranger now, and sometimes that's not enough. The electronic age does
create some problems.
