 From digital to analog at the output of the Sony, and from analog to
digital at the input of the sound card. Two conversions.

Yes, using the converter in the laptop.

Yes, with a sound card that has an optical input. No conversions. If
your sound card has an S/PDIF coaxial digital audio input, you can
use a $100 optical-to-S/PDIF converter box.
