I don't think there's any minidisc recorder that monitors off the
recording medium. You're at the mercy of the mechanism and the media.
As with all digital media, things may seem fine even though you are
actually close to the breaking point.
I just experienced a disastrous series of dropouts on my Sharp
MD-MT90. I dropped it a few weeks ago. I experienced only a couple of
dropouts in a lot of recording after that, and I was starting to
trust it again. Perhaps it was thrown out of alignment and has been
operating on the edge of failure ever since. Perhaps a piece of dust
that the error correction system normally could handle pushed it over
the limit last Monday.
The HHB minidisc recorder does have a pre-record buffer, a very
valuable feature. And the build is much more rugged than the little
pocket machines like mine.
