I use angled connectors only because my Telinga mics came with them. To protect the recorder and the mic I tape the mic cord to both the minidisc recorder and the mic handle. This is because most of my recording is done in the field and entanglements between the mic cord and branches is, for me, very common. I carry a roll of tape in my gadget bag for just this purpose.
