FWIW there's a thread on the minidisc.org forums about how the 3rd party
tool that was first-to-market (though I think it's free?) is still a
better option since it (so I gathered) lets you "unlock" (ie convert to
normal WAV) files recorded via the optical input -- Sony's tool only
unlocks analog (mic/line in) recordings.

On a related front, Grace Designs has updated the Lunatec v3 to offer an
optical out. So v3->HiMD at full 16/44 is now a possibility... I'm waiting
to see if Sharp releases a HiMD deck myself, and whether HiMD media
becomes more available/affordable.

Btw I gently prodded HHb in the Sennheiser booth at AES about a possible
HiMD Portadisc and got only that they were "looking at it." They did seem
to clearly indicate that they would be updating the Portadisc itself
however, apparently before any HiMD product...

 best,
  aaron
