Of course! I was presupposing that some people would want to avoid the
analog stage and A/D of a prosumer device entirely...

Incidentally, I was reading this morning a thread at minidisc.org that
non-rigorous testing seems to indicate that the new HiMD decks *resample*
their optical inputs, ie that even in PCM (uncompressed) mode the
recodings are not bit-identical to what they are fed. If anyone on-list
has a Hi-MD deck I'd be curious to hear if they've looked into this...
