Hi Clive,

You can usually get cheap, robust MZ-R37's, slight updates of the 35, on
eBay...

Among current models I was a fan of the recent generation Sharps with
"traceback" (preroll) recording... but there has been disection of
substandard powering/preamps on some models. I believe I had the DR380 and
was well-satisfied.

The new HiMD gear allows uncompressed recording, but you can only get them
from Sony currently. (Incidentally: there is now beta shareware that
"unlocks" your uncompressed recordings so you can do whatever you want
with them after uploading to your PC... see minidisc.org).

You might consider the new Edirol R1 CF recorder that was just announced,
it does 24-bit uncompressed WAV recording (thought at 44.1) to compact
flash... but it's untested. It does like the MZ-R35/37 however run off
conventional AAs... always nice!

In other MD news btw there is much anticipation that HiMD recorders might
be updated to allow playback (probably not recording) of MP3s -- not of
much interest for recording, but a welcome change of direction from Sony
that might cause a the medium to re-emerge as a contender...

 best
  aaron
