That quickening just before the catch is a "feeding buzz" that's used to
provide a higher-resolution image just at decision time. This is exactly
the same thing that a fighter jet's radar does as it acquires a target.
Normally the radar sends out relatively widely-spaced pulses to seek
targets, then sends a much more rapid pulse in the final acquisition phase=

that allows it to identify and locate the target much more accurately.
