You know, I think you're right about it being a Steller's Jay - even
if I didn't see any around the area. I wasn't present while
recording: at the moment I was half a mile away in camp cooking
breakfast.

yes, but not entirely correct and is now out of date especially as far as
HHB Portadrive is concerned.
cheers
Paul, HHB (although only for a few more days as moving to New Zealand!)

found this

which contains a nice comparison chart of HD recorder features
"Microphones are not ears,
Loudspeakers are not birds,
A listening room is not nature."

I'd recommend that you definitely NOT place either the singers or the
microphones at the center. The silo, being nearly a perfect
cylinder, will presumably have cylindrical modes at frequencies
corresponding to integral submultiples of its radius. All of those
modes will make the silo into a giant comb filter. Of course, it may
be that that effect is what you want, so experimentation should be
the order of the day.
Also, just based on having stuck my head inside the silo on my
family's farm, I'd estimate the reverb time as being far greater than
the 4-5 seconds that you mention. More than 10 seconds I'd guess.
It's certainly a unique environment.
