I've been disappointed with iTunes as a mp3 encoder. It was originally based on soundjam, is in fact that program reworked. I used to use and liked soundjam. But, the rich controllability of the encoding in soundjam has been limited, many options are not there. I've not gotten as good a results as I can with Peak or SparkXL in comparisons. Plus iTunes is busy stuffing your hard disk with everything you do, requiring effort to get rid of it. I definitely don't want every temp mp3 I make added to the library and cataloged. Even just playing something does that in iTunes.
