It's at such times I'll team the Portadisc with the Sound Devices MP2.
The combo, with a 15dB attenuating cord between does give more clean
gain. I usually set the Portadisc input to attenuate 15 or 30 dB in that
setup too. I've not measured how much extra gain, but 5-10 should not be
a problem. Most commonly the mic I'm using with that is the SASS/MKH-20.
Makes it's coverage much larger.

Funny how some folks go through batteries with the Portadisc, and I
hardly ever have to change to the 2nd pac, even when out all day. I
think part of it is I realize that few things make just one
vocalization. I don't often miss in survey work for not running around
in record/pause all the time. In fact most of the time I don't even have
it powered up. I also will plug it into the charger when back in the
Ranger. Too lazy to get the batteries out and into the high speed
chargers. And don't need to.

It would not be hard to use tabbed NIMH cells and shrink wrap to make a
bigger external pac for the Portadisc. Even with C cells it would double
your time. And D's are now up to over 4X the newest AA's. That should be
a all day pac for just about anyone. Would not be hard to design into a
fanny pac.
