I believe that the harsh throaty calls mean the bird is upset. Otherwise you
generally just hear the peeps, chirps, or whistles.

Was their nest. But they were just going on with normal family life. Not
upset from what I could tell, but it was feeding time.

They completely ignored us. They are very used to boaters.
