Dave - I don't think reliability is an issue with minidisc. I started
recording in January of 1998 with a Sony MZ-R50 recorder and a Telinga twin
science mic. Now 6+ years and 50 full minidiscs later the original recorder
still works great, even though it has been dropped several times onto
concrete and has a cracked window. All the minidisks still read fine too.

Now I don't say this is the best way to go, but at least from a durability
standpoint, you should be ok with a good minidisc recorder.
