The Nature Sounds Society (NSS) and the California Library of Natural
Sounds of the Oakland Museum of California, in partnership with the
United States National Park Service, is pleased to present the
Twentieth Annual Field Recording Workshop, May 21-23, 2004. This
year's workshop will take place at Whiskeytown National Recreation
Area in the Shasta-Trinity Mountains near Redding, California. The
theme will be "Surrounded by Sound."

Featured speakers include:

=95Lang Elliott, nature sound recordist, author and producer. Elliott
has produced nature CDs and sound guides for species identification,
notably the Stokes Field Guide to Birdsongs, Eastern Region, a 3-CD
reference guide to the songs and calls of 372 species published by
Time Warner Audiobooks.

=95Sam Easterson, a videographer with many exhibitions to his credit,
whose work now focuses on capturing nature from the perspective of
animals and plants with sound and video.

=95Michael Stocker, an acoustician, musician and naturalist who
advocates on behalf of healthy ocean soundscapes.

=95Dan Dugan, sound engineer, speaking on the latest technology in
field recording.

Additional workshop session leaders will include Rudy Trubitt, sound
engineer and recordist, and Arlyn Christopherson, master teacher and
former education director for the Oakland Zoo.

Workshop participants learn about nature sound recording and
technical equipment during daily sessions in the field with
experienced recordists. In keeping with the theme, technical sessions
will focus on 3D and surround arrays, which build a more profound
sense of space and enhance the sound experience for listeners.
Evening lecture sessions will cover topics in biology, including
discussion of the environments in which we will be recording,
recording techniques, natural quiet and soundscape measurement.
Participants will also learn about equipment and microphone handling
techniques as well as being introduced to the current work being done
by the National Park Service for the preservation of natural
soundscapes. The workshop is open to both amateurs and
professionals.

Accommodations are at NEED Camp, the Shasta-Trinity environmental
education camp on the banks of beautiful Clear Creek in the
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Whiskeytown NRA is located at
the convergence of several biotic zones, and as a result is an area
heavily studied for its biodiversity.

The Nature Sounds Society is an organization dedicated to the
recording and creative use of natural sounds. The California Library
of Natural Sounds is a resource center and a regional collection of
recordings of California and the Pacific Northwest. It is a program
of the Natural Sciences Department of the Oakland Museum of
California.

Cost of the workshop is $185 for NSS members, $210 for non-members
(includes one-year NSS membership). For more information, contact the
Oakland Museum of California's Library of Natural Sounds at 510/238-
